# SELF-REGULATION BY NEGATIVE FEEDBACK **Negative feedback cycles should dominate over positive feedback.**

🔴 A feedback **control** system stabilizes itself within a **range of limiting values** via negative feedback.
Positive feedback is necessary as well, in order to get things started. However, a subsystem in which positive feedback loops prevail will thereby create a vicious circle; it will enter into a process of **amplification** in one direction or the other, e.g. it will either **explode or freeze**. In either case it destroys itself, thus eliminating a **disturbing element** in the overall system.
Hence any positive feedback cycle needs to be dominated by negative feedback, bringing it back to a self-regulating equilibrium, the cheapest way of **governing** a system, especially in environmental management.
**Precondition:** enough **steering** and **linking** possibilities of parts of the system.
